Want to Learn to Paint Like the Old California Masters?
Introducing California Impressionism with Karl Dempwolf
Most landscape and plein air painters drool over the works of the early California Impressionists. They had a unique style and a feel that most painters wish they could create.

For decades, Karl Dempwolf has made it his life’s work to learn from the paintings of these great masters and figure out just how they made such wonderful compositions, found such rich yet tasteful colors, and used such wonderful brushwork.

If you’re at all familiar with Karl Dempwolf’s paintings, you know his work is among the top-selling paintings in galleries, and that he is considered the living artist whose work comes closest to the great California masters like William Wendt (1865-1946), Edgar Payne (1882-1947), Hanson Puthuff (1875-1972), and Granville Redmond (1871-1935).

Karl’s rare workshops are in high demand, and few people actually get the chance to study with him — because he plans to spend the rest of his life painting, not teaching. Before he stopped teaching, we convinced Karl to preserve his lifetime learning on video, so he can share it with you and so his years of discovering these techniques will not be lost.
Priceless Information
This video will help you advance tremendously in your own painting, even if California Impressionism isn’t your exact style. These techniques are priceless and can be applied to all kinds of painting and painting mediums. You’ll get to share in Karl’s decades (yes, decades!) of experience and put it to work for yourself, saving you years of trial and error. Best of all, your own personal look and feel will evolve as your paintings get better and better.

After watching this video, painting alongside Karl Dempwolf, and practicing what you’ve learned, you’ll be a more confident and competent painter, producing paintings at the “next level.”
Who This Video Is For
This video is for you if admire the Early California painters, if you’ve always wondered how they captured such magic in their paintings, if you love color and emotion in your paintings, and if you want to have a rare chance to discover what Karl has spent years perfecting. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate painter, or an experienced professional, there is value here for you.
Who This Video Is Not For
This video isn’t for you if you’re happy with where you are, if you are already getting great compliments on your artwork, and if your paintings are selling as soon as they hit the gallery walls. (Though we know you would still benefit from it.) And it’s not for you if you don’t realize the value of learning from the mistakes and lessons of others to save you the time and frustration of making those mistakes on your own.
The Humble Master
I have tremendous respect for Karl — he has a unique style to his paintings that’s highly recognizable and all his own. He speaks softly, yet confidently, and he is humble and kind. Match all those qualities with his love for sharing what he knows, and I knew we had a perfect match for a timeless instructional video.
Emotional Experience
One of the most important things you’ll take away from this video is the emotional experience that is part of plein air painting — being in nature, enjoying solitude or companionship, feeling the spiritual depth of it all. Karl shares this so freely and beautifully, I was deeply touched by it and know that you will be too. But even if you don’t want to go outdoors to paint, you’ll learn how to capture the feel as if your paintings are outdoors.
How I Made Karl Blush
When Karl was in our studio, we sat down for a personal interview. I told him that he would be remembered as a great California master like Edgar Payne, William Wendt, and Granville Redmond. He blushed.

I was serious.

In fact, we’ve had the world’s best artists painting on our soundstage to create some amazing instructional videos. Yet this painting is among the finest, and one of the most unique styles. Anyone who loves the great plein air masters from California will want to own this video.
Preserving History
Imagine for a moment that we could go back and find full-color films of those great artists teaching their techniques. They would be among the most prized pieces in your library of art books and videos. Being able to have Karl’s best techniques on video so that you, and generations of artists to come, can learn from this amazing painter is like preserving a glorious piece of history. I’m so thankful that we live in a world where technology allows us to do this.
Classic Dempwolf
In this video, you’ll have a front row seat while Karl demonstrates the step-by-step painting process of California Impressionist masters as he creates the painting titled The Monterey Cypress Is King. It’s a “classic Dempwolf,” and it will be as if you were with him when he painted it!

In addition to the full painting demonstration and instruction, you’ll delight in a gallery show of some of Karl’s best work and see the in-depth interview where I got to dig into Karl’s brain about anything … and everything. Frankly, this is a classic interview, where you can learn so much about the thinking behind the paintings.

Plus, there’s two surprise bonus segments for you:
  •  Bonus 1: Karl’s best framing tips
  •  Bonus 2: How you can use colored pencils as an effective sketching tool
So much to enjoy here!
Karl Dempwolf … Then and Now
Born in Germany in 1939, Karl spent his younger years in picturesque Bavaria, surrounded by sparkling lakes, dramatic hills, misty forests, and the majestic Alps — the ideal setting to develop his love for nature. When he was a teen, Karl’s family moved to the U.S., where his dad worked in the aerospace industry.

Missing their beautiful homeland, Karl’s parents would ask him to paint pictures of something from Bavaria, which he gladly did with water paints, crayons, or whatever was available. Though he had never been exposed to art at this stage in his life, he continued to create paintings as his parents asked, leading to his natural passion for plein air painting.

In California, Karl went on to become the first All-American athlete at Cal State Northridge and earned a graduate degree at USC. For the most part, except for some work at Art Center School of Design and a few workshops, Karl is a self-taught artist. He always painted just for fun, and even has some of his paintings dating back to his teenage years.

He started his career as a teacher, filmmaker, and photographer. Having only painted for fun, he never really imagined himself as a full-time, working artist, even though that dream was always there.

After being laid off from the corporate world and considered too old for other photography jobs, Karl experienced a major turning point in his life.

He had what he calls “the bug.” Though he’d never sold a painting, he declared to his wife that he was going to be a full-time artist.

Fast forward to now, and you’ll find Karl to be one of today’s most successful and celebrated artists. His exhibitions, collections, and awards number in the hundreds. He’s a sought-after artist and instructor who loves to share what he knows in a way you can easily learn from and apply.

Here’s just a glimpse into this video with Karl:
Lifetime of Achievement
In 2017, I had the privilege to honor Karl with the PleinAir Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award. We celebrated his accomplishments, as well as who he is as a person and what he’s brought to the art world. Though he’s one of today’s top artists, Karl has never lost his enthusiasm for teaching and for sharing what he knows with others who are eager to learn his techniques. Karl is a genuine giver.
There Is Absolutely No Artist Alive Today Who Can Teach Early California Impressionism Like Karl Dempwolf
Loving the Early California Impressionists, as so many do, is the EXACT reason we invited Karl Dempwolf to spend several days creating this awesome video, where he shows what he has learned from a life of study of these California masters.
Developing Your Own Unique Style
One of the most incredible things about Karl is that over the years he has developed a unique style that sets him apart from every other landscape artist. Having a signature style while still producing high-quality artwork is a dream for nearly every artist, and one of the best ways you can achieve that dream is to learn from this modern master. You don’t have to copy Karl’s style — he will tell you how to discover your own unique style.

As you watch and paint right along with Karl, one of the first things you’ll notice is how relaxed and confident he is — a natural state for this highly accomplished professional artist who has enjoyed a long and successful career. Spend time with Karl by way of this video, and you’ll just want to soak up everything he generously offers. You’ll see what he does that makes his paintings highly recognizable, and how you can take what you’re learning and apply it to your own artwork.

You’ll see every step Karl takes for each of his paintings
  • Pencil sketch: choosing what you like from the scene and developing your sketch
  • Designing your composition to make a show-stopping painting
  • Creating an on-location color sketch to grab the essence of color and light
  • The way to properly transfer your drawing to your canvas
  • The unique colors and materials you’ll need
  • Karl’s exclusive approach to creating harmony in a painting with color
  • The important first steps for correctly blocking in the design
  • Using color to bring the masses of shape alive, and making critical adjustments
  • Knowing when and why to quit — a lesson most artists need to fully understand
  • The proper way to match a frame to make your painting stand out
Why Waste Years Teaching Yourself?
Some artists throw around being self-taught as a badge of honor, having often taken decades to accomplish what could have been done in much less time. But why waste your valuable time when you can learn from the trial and error of a master like Karl Dempwolf, who did not have art videos available to teach him when he wanted to learn?

To experience these detailed steps with such a high-caliber artist is a dream come true for many of us, no matter how long we’ve been painting. And now, this is your chance to own this video so you can refer to it again and again as you continue to progress in your painting skills and develop your own unique style. And over time, if you have a problem to solve, pop the video back on and watch it again. You’ll learn new things every time you watch it because you’ll be ready for the next lessons.

What will it feel like when someone walks in the door and is instantly drawn to your painting and asking “Who painted this?” — and is then in disbelief when they discover your name in the corner? Then the ultimate compliment: They say it reminds them of a great California master.

How will it feel when you have finally found your own style and voice, something most of us have struggled with for decades?

Here’s even more of what you’ll experience
  • The WHY of specific materials, not just the WHAT (you need to know this!)
  • The KEY element that will lead to an excellent painting
  • Karl’s kinda crazy checklist for critiquing your own work
  • What to do if you’re not happy halfway through your painting (don’t stop, you can save it!)
  • When NOT to copy nature as you see it!
  • How to position yourself for the best painting possible — Karl’s best advice
  • BONUS: The handy sketch tool most artists overlook (now you’ll know)
  • The magic of painting in plein air and finishing in the studio (the perfect combination!)
  • Too focused on the mechanics and missing out on “the experience”? Here’s the fix!
  • Creating a little mystery in your paintings and leaving them wondering!
  • How to copy your favorite painters as a learning tool, then find your own voice.
  • Find yourself lonely when painting? Do THIS!
  • And much, much more!
