Dear Artist,
Have you ever had a “false” compliment?
You know, someone wants to say something nice, but you can tell they are just trying to be encouraging?
Things like…
“Ah, nice colors.”
“Ooh, I like the effort you’ve made.”
“Well, you certainly are creative.”
I love that people are being nice, but I’d like to have sincere, unsolicited compliments like...
“Who painted this? It’s absolutely wonderful.”
“Is this from your collection? Is the painter someone famous?”
Or
“You did this? Really? It’s the best you’ve ever done. You need to enter this in every possible art competition. You’ll win for sure.”
I’m going to let you in on a secret I discovered by accident.
The way to get compliments is to do better paintings. I know because I was always getting lots of false compliments … but my paintings were not getting any better.
